Poppytree's Pooter Problems Empty Poppytree's Pooter Problems

Post  poppytree Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:21 pm

Well, we're back but things are not going well. Arrrived saturday night to find house very cold. Had turned the thermostat down a bit too low! Put heating on but it's taken 48 hours to get it to managable levels - still only 18 upsatairs and a little lower down stairs. The radiators are red hot but the walls, floor, carpets, furniture are still cold. each day gets a little warmer and we now have hot water! Slept in dressinggown, bedsocks and had 2 duvets and a hot water bottle each - doesn't help going from 30+ to -5!

Couldn't watch TV as the batteries had gone in the remote and local shop didn't have any so sunday was a bit of a disaster too. For the first time ever I was not glad to get home after a holiday!

The final straw was when I switched on my computer to pick up the 300 or so emails and do the on-line banking and other important things. There was a smell of burning, a 'fizzing' noise and then a loud BANG! I am now at work for an hour to send a few emails but my friendy computer expert is off sick! I may be able to get on-line for an hour or so again tomorrow but will be out of touch for a couple of weeks at least until I get a new computer and/or get it repaired or manage to access the hard disc of my old one.

Can't wait to get started on the Visa application - hopefully next time we visit Adelaide (or maybe the time after that if the Visa takes more than 18 months) we will definately not be coming back.

Things are improving..........slowly

House definately a little warmer today. Bought a long sleeved warm nighty in M&S. Replaced the batteries and the remote works.

Will have computer access for a couple of hours tomorrow and have found out I can hopefully pick up emails via Virgin media website - need to find an old bill, membership and account numbers to access them so might be able to do that tomorrow!

Have downloaded pix onto this computer and will transfer them to photobucket soon (Singapore - mainly taken at the Orchid garden) A few rubbish ones but haven't had a chance to edit them yet.

House cosy and warm, TV working well and caught up on my fav programmes and....... best of all............... I have a fabulous new computer which seems to be working well and 95% of my old hard drive contents have been transferred over.

Still finding my way around as it has been updated considerably and Windows 7 is a bit strange .Emails are no longer on Outlook but finding my way around slowly.

Use those at work Jacky but I now have Windows live mail and Internet explorer.

Just loaded Acrobat so I can read and access my PDF files so getting there..............slowly (the PC is FAST...I can hardly keep up with it. My old one was so slow, I got used to going off for a cuppa while waiting for things to load. This one bleeps or plays a little tune and gets on with it.

It seems I'm back to my roller coaster lifestyle - never a dull moment! At least I'm coping and the sun has been shining all afternoon.......bonus. Really like this PC but finding all the new things a bit scarey! Can't wait for the family to wake up so I can try out SKYPE

Guess what? The boiler went off this morning! No heat or hot water...........again

Next door neighbour called round as they had same problem and had called out the Gas Board. Thought the gas supply to the road had been affected but we were the only 2 houses.

Turned out, we needed a new regulator on our meter which they fixed there and then, but our neighbours drive is being dug up and a new gas pipe laid as I write. What a week!

I love my new one too Janet, I switch it on and it is almost instant now whereas my laptop would take for ever so I would usually put it on while I got dressed and had my breakfast. Very Happy

Mine's getting plenty of use today - search property prices in and around Adelaide, Visa details, Finding a Migration Agent ................. dreaming of a new life down under.

Waiting to see if we will be accepted then its all systems go for the next 18 months to 2 years. Checked out the local house prices and very disappointed that ours has lost nearly 20% since a valuation done at the peak of prices. Not good news.

I hope to be around for a long time yet Jen. you can't get rid of me that easily

We made the descision while away in Oz this year having come close last year. The freezing winter weather and seeing the grandchildren growing up so fast persuaded me not to wait any longer. It looks like it could get harder if we wait too long.

We pass the initial criteria for a Parents contibutory Visa but it now takes 2-4 years instead of 18 months - 2 years. There are less places and its getting harder all the time. Still hoping to persue this even if it means taking the more expensive option to speed things up and guarantee basic health cover
