Snow, and bird feeding Empty Snow, and bird feeding

Post  Christine Mon Jan 11, 2010 11:44 pm

I thought I'd pass on these tips I've just read in today's paper, I don't know whether they work, they were suggested by other readers.
Apparently breadcrumbs are as effective as salt to clear snow from underfoot, difficult to imagine, but written with authority so may be worth trying, and no mess afterwards as the birds eat it up. And a 'puppy cage' is first rate as a bird feeder, to allow small birds to feed without squirrels or large birds having access to it and taking it all in one fell swoop. Sounds like a good idea to give the little ones a chance, so long as there is food available for the biggies, (I don't know that it's very kind to let larger birds see food that they haven't access to, I find it difficult to favour one over another, they're all hungry and they're all birds to me! My hubby wouldn't give one seed to a wood pigeon if he could avoid it, he thinks they're greedy, I just think they're large birds and they need to eat a lot, and they can't help it if everything goes flying when they land with a flap on the bird table!)

Read something else too, and this is unfair, the South East are forecast rain and clear roads before the East Mids, and we've been snowed in for ages! Rolling Eyes Anyone know who I speak to about it? Smile

I think it's the Government with all the hot air they spout which is causing this GLOBAL WARMING ??? Christine.

I agree with your hubby Christine that wood pigeons are greedy but still feed them anyway! Just counted 16 sitting in neighbour's tree!

We have a pair of wood pidgeons or wood dustbins , 3 magpies , 2 robins ( Which is unusual ) a very noisy woodpecker and lots of tits and others , I feed them all the time .Don't forget they love a big tub of fresh water for bathing and drinking , hey share a ice cream tub with the cat who drinks outside , all comes from kitchen tap so do;n ask ! I love birds , Mum gets huge great Hardy darrs in her garden and some little birds to very pretty tropical type .....she also gets plagued by monkeys , vervet monkeys and they often get in and case havoc ! Have to say they a very charming when you 1st see them but when they get in the house and eat your fruit , and get into the breadbin they are a pain .Mum and dad were having a afternoon nap , and one sat on the bed for ages watching them , dad thought it was the cat and then gently woke mum who had a fit and chased i away , but the monkey won , because he had made a right ol' mess down stairs in the kitchen opened up cupboards and pulled things out , and put foot prints alover the washing ! x Laughing

Oh Lexie, it's bad enough with the squirrels we get in the garden. I have squirrel proof feeders to stop them but one that's not so that they do get something Very Happy They usually go next door though as she has a table that she puts lots of food on. Sometimes she has 3 or 4 squirrels chasing each other around the garden Very Happy also foxes and badgers but I have never seen the badgers.

Molly always does a good job of chasing the squirrels away Lexie and for some reason we never see any cats in our garden. They go in next doors - leave by the back fence along the outside of our hedge and into the garden the other side of us by their back fence Very Happy I think if they stopped and stayed their ground Molly wouldnt know what to do, she just rushes up barking at them Laughing

Just seen a fox in our garden - it set off next door's security lights and the garden is all illuminated at the moment.

Heating's gone off so I'm off to have an early night to make up for the lack of sleep over the last few days. Talk to you tomorrow
